From the PresidentWelcome to this month's ebulletin. Normally, those of us who work in the northern hemisphere can expect August to be a relatively quiet month. Last year, pandemic influenza intervened. This August, we’ve been busy for a very different reason: the new coalition government has been getting into its stride on public health policy issues. Work continues apace on the implementation of the NHS white paper and on the development of the White Paper on the English public health system – including the proposed new national public health service Ministers want to publish the public health paper before the Christmas recess and, in practical terms, this means the policies have to be sorted out in some detail by October. Hence, it seems, the current haste to get things in place. The results of the FPH survey will steer our input to the national discussions and it’s vital that it really does reflect all our members’ views. If you haven’t completed it already, please go to FPH Survey on Government White Paper , as it closes today. The results will be on the FPH website as soon as they have been collated and analysed, so that you can use them to inform your own discussions. The white paper will also be an opportunity for the Government to set out its approach to managing the tension and synergies between regulation and personal responsibility for health. Although recent ministerial speeches and press lines from the Department of Health imply a reluctance to regulate, last month’s FPH/Yougov surve, publilshed in our Healthy Nudges report, has demonstrated clearly that there are important policy areas where the majority of the UK public would welcome more, rather than less, regulation. Councillors, MPs and Ministers would be well-advised to take note. Lindsey

GP Inquiry Paper on Health Promotion As part of its ongoing inquiry into the quality of general practice in England, the King’s Fund has published a paper on health promotion and ill-health prevention To inform its work, the Kings Fund's independent inquiry panel commissioned a research project to examine the contribution of general practice to health promotion and ill-health prevention and the resulting paper - General Practice and Health Promotion - assesses what good-quality care in this area might look like and how it might be measured. The review focuses on four specific areas of activity: childhood immunisation, smoking cessation, cardiovascular disease and obesity. More details can be found at the King's Fund website. Comments on the paper can be made via the website and help feed into the Inquiry. All comments are seen by the independent panel and taken on board for consideration of the final inquiry report in November.
Health Protection Profiles The Health Protection Profiles, a national project of the Health Protection Agency, is due for online launch in September. The profiles, which will be carried on the HPA’s website, have been produced to provide the public with key surveillance information in a visual and easy-to-grasp way. As such, development work has drawn from extensive engagement with the public, over both content and presentation, and their launch comes at a time of increased emphasis on the accessibility of health-based data. The profiles currently span 19 indicators, ranging from vaccine-preventable disease to environmental hazards. In-depth data is also available, providing quick access to interactive maps, with options of building custom-data tables by locality The profiles are available on the HPA website for a preview period, prior to planned launch on 15 September when the profiles web pages will be linked up to home and topic pages. The profiles can be found at: Health Protection Profiles.
The PHCN Casebook: Can You Do Your Bit During the Changes? This is an initiative from the Public Health Commissioning Network (PHCN) encouraging public health professionals to share lessons learned from challenging or interesting work. Every day across the NHS and in local government the same decisions and situations are faced, such as how best to implement a new service or seek engagement on a particular issue. The Casebook helps organisations and individuals to be more efficient and knowledgeable by making use of others’ experiences. Casebook articles are very brief, their principal aim being to highlight an area of work someone has had an experience in, and provide an easy way to contact that individual (usually an email address). Simply send a one-sentence email to tomporter@nhs.net and you will be contacted to help with developing a Casebook article. We would strongly encourage all FPH Fellows, Members and trainee members to think about what they could submit, especially during this period of change, to capture our collective knowledge. You can browse the first three issues of the Casebook at PHCN Casebook website.
